Our Student Success Story: From Internship to Industry – Theekshana’s Journey to Hospitality Excellence with AAC

"Hospitality is in my blood as a Sri Lankan. I wanted to not only practice the craft but also gain academic knowledge to enhance my skills. Studying at AAC, from a Specialist Diploma to a BA (Hons) in International Hospitality Management (Top-up) with the University of Derby, gave me the perfect balance of practical experience and theoretical expertise."

From Internship to Industry: Theekshana’s Hospitality Journey with AAC

For many Sri Lankans, hospitality is more than just a profession—it’s a way of life. With a passion for the industry and a drive to enhance his skills, Theekshana embarked on an academic journey that led him from a Specialist Diploma in Hospitality Management at Academies Australasia College (AAC) to a BA (Hons) in International Hospitality Management (Top-up), in partnership with the University of Derby.

Hands-On Learning Through Internship

Believing that mastering hospitality requires both practical experience and academic knowledge, Theekshana chose AAC to build a solid foundation. As part of his Specialist Diploma, he underwent a 6-month Industrial Attachment at Kith Cafe, where he took on the roles of Kitchen Helper and Service Staff.

During his internship, he received a monthly allowance of SGD 1,500 and gained invaluable hands-on experience in:

✔ Kitchen operations and food preparation

✔ Garnishing techniques for presentation

✔ Customer service and interaction

✔ Operating the Point of Sale (POS) system

His internship not only enhanced his technical skills but also gave him real-world exposure to the fast-paced hospitality industry.

AAC’s Role in His Internship Success

AAC provided strong support throughout the internship process, ensuring a smooth transition from classroom to industry. The college handled all documentation for his work pass and liaised with the company, allowing Theekshana to focus entirely on his role at Kith Cafe.

Looking Ahead: A Future in Hospitality

Now pursuing his BA (Hons) in International Hospitality Management (Top-up) in partnership with the University of Derby, Theekshana has ambitious plans for the future. His goal is to return to Sri Lanka and contribute to the growth of the hospitality sector, applying the knowledge and skills gained through his education and hands-on training.

Conclusion

His story is a testament to how AAC’s comprehensive hospitality programmes, industry exposure, and strong student support help shape future professionals ready to make an impact in the global hospitality industry.
